In April 2025, the first centralized meeting of the Subtechnical Committee on Interconnection of Information Technology Equipment under the National Beacon Committee was successfully held. During the meeting, six standard proposals—including “Intelligent Grading of Control Systems for Smart Home Interconnectivity” and “Smart Home Interconnectivity—Part 4: Local Interconnection Testing Specifications”—were reviewed and approved. This marks a further refinement of China’s standard system for smart home interconnectivity, and the technical barriers to cross-brand interoperability among terminal devices such as switches and sockets will soon be broken down.
The standard proposal adopted this time focuses on three core areas: First, it clarifies the hierarchical standards for intelligent control systems, establishing unified functional and performance requirements for smart switches and sockets of different intelligence levels; second, it standardizes local interconnection testing methods to ensure stable connectivity and secure data transmission among products from different brands within a local area network; and third, it establishes a classification and description system for sensed data, enabling precise data exchange between switches and sockets and other smart home devices. Meanwhile, the meeting also discussed revision proposals for four national standards currently under review, which will further align with the industry’s evolving technological needs.
Industry experts point out that the current smart switch and socket market faces challenges such as high brand barriers and protocol incompatibility. As a result, users often have to purchase products within the same ecosystem, which limits their choice of products and hampers the efficiency of fully integrated smart home solutions. After the new standards are implemented, they will help establish unified technical specifications, accelerating ecosystem collaboration among “switches and sockets, home appliances, and platforms.” It is projected that by 2026, the market share of smart switches and sockets with cross-brand compatibility will rise to over 35%.
